It started out as a blogging platform in 2003 but soon transformed into a CMS and later a full-featured website building platform. Today, WordPress is the world’s most popular website builder/content management system. It is used by more than 43% of all websites on the internet. It can be used to create websites, blogs, eCommerce stores and more.
WordPress is used by well known entities such as the White House, Microsoft, and the Rolling Stones. it can be used by big business, small business, and individuals. With over 50,000 free plugins and 5,000 free themes, as well as many more premium options, WordPress has more power and performance than traditional websites.
Key Elements
Before we get started
First you will need to be aware of a few key elements.
The address of your website (example, ours is graphicfx.net) Anyone can buy a domain name. The most straightforward way to do so, is to visit a domain name registrar, such as GoDaddy or Hostgator. Think about your brand identity. Then key in the domain you want to buy, and look for available options within .com, .net, or any other available options. After you buy, you will be charged yearly and the yearly amounts can range from $15 – $20 per year. This is relatively inexpensive and in some cases, you get additional discounts such as first year Free.
Storage and server space – the place where your website is going to reside – webhosting makes your site viewable online. Hosting companies have several plans available for you to choose from. We would recommend, Hostgator. They have basic plans regularly priced at about $13 – $18 monthly, $156 – $216 yearly. (the domain name is included in this cost)
WordPress has over 5,000 free themes available for you to choose from. They are a starting point and can be made your own. Template fonts, colors, headings, images, and content are easily modified. Our recommended choice of theme, Blocksy. It was built with the Gutenberg editor in mind and has a lot of options. It is fast, lightweight, and highly customizable. You will need to make sure to have your content ready. Think about your 3 core pages to get started – Home, About, Contact. Think about your site description, mission statement, goals and objectives. Also consider providing images and high quality photos.
